About
Mary Pat Sullivan is a registered social worker and social gerontologist. She is Full Professor in the School of Social Work and Graduate Faculty, Graduate Studies and Research. Dr. Sullivan’s research work led to the development of Rare Dementia Support (RDS) Canada where she is currently Director. RDS Canada, a tailored support community for people affected by dementia, is led by Nipissing University and in partnership with RDS in the United Kingdom. Her research contributions were recognized when Dr. Sullivan received the NU Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence in 2023.

Dr. Sullivan’s other career highlights include her work to develop, deliver and evaluate geriatric mental health services in northern and eastern Ontario, heading social work at Brunel University London (UK), Executive Committee membership for the British Society of Gerontology, and the inaugural recipient of the Tilda Goldberg Social Work Research Fellowship (UK).

Dr. Sullivan’s principal research interests are focused on the social context of aging and older age including geriatric mental health, dementia care and support, social isolation and loneliness, elder abuse, and aging without children.
