Bear Encounter
Bear sightings at Nipissing University have occurred and will continue to occur. To help educate the University community on bear behaviour, the following links to the Ministry of Natural Resources’ website provide information on how to avoid bear encounters and what to do in the unlikely event of a bear attack.
All bear sightings should be reported to the Health and Safety Officer at Ext. 4123 as soon as possible following the occurrence.
Note: Residence staff will report bear sighting to Campus Security Services, no matter the time of day or day of the week, but also follow-up each sighting with an email to facilities.
Black bears live in most parts of Ontario. Chances are that, wherever you live, visit or spend your leisure time, you will be near bears or a bear habitat. For your own personal safety, it is important that you learn about bears and their behaviour. Know how to prevent and handle potential encounters with bears.
How to avoid encounters with black bears while enjoying the outdoors
Black bears are smart, curious, powerful, and potentially dangerous. They also do not like surprises! If you are a hiker, cyclist, jogger, berry picker, or you plan to spend some time in “bear country,” you need to know how bears behave so that you can avoid an encounter.
Knowing what to do if you encounter a bear is being “Bear Wise.” However, some encounters may be more dangerous than others, so it is important to recognize the signs and know what you can do to protect yourself.
Field Trip
Field Trip Waiver Form
One of these forms should be distributed to and signed by field trip participants, and then returned to the field trip coordinator.
There are three (3) different forms available:
For all field trip participants that are under the age of majority. This waiver must be signed by the participant and their legal parent(s)/guardian.
Waiver for a dangerous activity requiring medical clearance
For all field trip participants that are engaging in a field trip that is inherently dangerous. This waiver must be signed by the participant, and have a medical doctor's note attached.

General student waiver (all other activities)
For all field trip participants not required to fill out one of the other waivers. This waiver must be signed by the participant.
Please familiarize yourself with these waivers so that you understand the requirements participants must agree to before participating.
