Research productivity

Faculty at Nipissing University are expected to maintain an active research portfolio, including applications for external funding through grant competitions, publishing in peer-reviewed formats appropriate to their discipline, presenting at conferences, and engaging in knowledge translation activities to share their work with the Nipissing University community as well as broader non-academic audiences. The specific research expectations vary by discipline and rank, as outlined in faculty annual performance evaluations and the tenure and promotion standards. Research output is an important component of academic career advancement at Nipissing.

Research  support

The Office of Graduate Studies, Research and Innovation serves as the central hub for research support at Nipissing University. The dedicated team provides personalized and tailored assistance to help researchers achieve their goals. Support for research activities at Nipissing, includes:

  • Internal Research Grants: Available to faculty to support pilot projects, data collection, knowledge mobilization, capacity building, grant writing, and seed funding to apply for larger external grants.
  • Support for Research Trainees: Mentorship opportunities are available for faculty to support research trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels through supervision of undergraduate and graduate student theses, hosting postdoctoral fellows, and funding applications to programs such as the Undergraduate Student Research Assistant and NOHFC Intern programs.
  • Access to Research Facilities: Shared research facilities are available to support data collection and analysis across a wide range of disciplines. Examples include the Central Analytic Facility and the Nipissing University Research Data Centre – the only facility in Northern Ontario where researchers can access confidential Statistics Canada micro data.
  • Professional Development: A yearly schedule of workshops, speaker series, and networking events is available to help researchers and their trainees form connections across campus, learn about research policies and procedures, and explore diverse approaches to research and knowledge mobilization.
  • Commercialization and Innovation: Supports provided for faculty who want to establish collaborative research agreements, industry partnerships, protect or commercialize their intellectual property, and learn more about technology transfer pathways.

Interdisciplinary collaboration or partnerships with other institutions

Nipissing University actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration by fostering research networks across departments and disciplines. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in cross-departmental projects and external partnerships, whether through joint grant applications, collaborative research initiatives, or co-authorship opportunities. Additionally, Nipissing has partnerships with other Canadian and international institutions, enabling faculty to collaborate with external researchers or participate in joint funding opportunities.

Sabbatical opportunities

Sabbatical leave is offered to tenured faculty to support dedicated research periods and academic renewal. More details can be found in the FASBU Collective Agreement.
