Balancing passion, purpose and leadership on and off the ice

Durham Regional Police Constable and Lakers alumnus Frank Longo started on his academic path in criminal justice in his high school law classes, where he developed a passion for analyzing crime trends, criminal law, and psychology. Pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at Nipissing University was the next step toward his goal of a career in policing.

Graduating in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Nipissing University was an experience that offered more than just academics, it provided a community where he thrived. “I wanted a smaller campus where I could build relationships, get involved, and make an impact,” he said. “Nipissing checked all the boxes, not to mention the beautiful campus and surrounding nature.”

While excelling academically, Longo was also a standout student-athlete as a member of the Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team. Balancing academics and athletics required discipline and strategic time management. “I set clear goals for myself,” he explained. “I attended every class, stayed engaged, collaborated with classmates, and managed my deadlines carefully. On the field, I stayed disciplined with training, eating healthy, and supporting teammates as we worked toward a common goal of a National Championship.”

This dedication led the Lakers to three National Championship appearances during Longo’s time at Nipissing, instilling in him the importance of perseverance and teamwork that he carried into his professional life.

Reflecting on his time at Nipissing, Longo highlighted the influential people who shaped his journey. Professors like Mark Andrews and James Kilroy brought the realities of policing to life, while teammates and mentors provided invaluable leadership lessons. “My first-year teammate Kyle Weatherall, current Manager of International Recruitment at Nipissing, showed me how to lead and build a supportive culture. His legacy still resonates in the program today.”

Longo’s love for sports extended beyond playing. He began coaching grassroots hockey goaltenders at age 14 in his hometown, a passion that grew into professional coaching roles. After graduating, he joined Stanstead College in Quebec before returning to Nipissing to coach the women’s hockey team. “Winning a USPORTS National Championship Silver Medal in the 2021-2022 season was unforgettable. The support from the Nipissing and North Bay communities was incredible. It truly is a hockey town.”

Now, Longo balances two demanding careers: as a Police Constable with Durham Regional Police and as a Goaltending Consultant and Canadian Scout for the Kenai River Brown Bears. Despite the different fields, both roles share a common thread. “Both allow me to make an impact, leave places better than I found them, and grow personally,” he said. “In policing, I enjoy the dynamic nature of the job and being part of a team that feels like family. In hockey, I love mentoring young athletes and helping them achieve their goals.”

Longo’s approach to mentorship is rooted in his own experiences. “I share my successes and failures, offering guidance and encouragement. Watching an athlete set a goal and then achieve it is the most rewarding part.” His advice for students aspiring to careers in athletics, coaching, or law enforcement is simple but profound: “Find your ‘why.’ It will keep you grounded during tough times. Be ready to face rejection and failure, it’s all part of the process. Stay focused, keep learning, and most importantly, enjoy the ride.”

Looking ahead, Longo has ambitious goals for the future. In policing, he plans to continue honing his skills and embracing opportunities for growth. In hockey, his dream of becoming an NHL Scout and contributing to a Stanley Cup win remains as strong as ever.

From the classrooms and lacrosse fields at Nipissing University to his work in law enforcement and hockey, Longo’s experiences and impressions reflect the supportive, community-focused environment that Nipissing fosters. His success highlights how the university supports students in developing the skills, leadership, and resilience to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.
