Award-winning broadcaster Scott Russell welcomed as Nipissing University Chancellor

North Bay, ON – Nipissing University officially installed award-winning broadcaster and author Dr. Scott Russell as its fifth Chancellor in a special ceremony held today at the NUSU Student Centre.  As Chancellor, Dr. Russell will serve as the ceremonial head of the institution, presiding over Convocation and acting as a key advocate and ambassador for Nipissing and its mission.

Reflecting on his new role, Dr. Russell expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the University’s growth and impact on the community. “It is a tremendous honour to be named Chancellor of Nipissing University,” said Dr. Russell. “This institution plays an essential role in shaping future leaders, not just here in North Bay, but across the globe. I look forward to supporting Nipissing’s continued excellence and working with the University’s exceptional team.”

Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor of Nipissing University, emphasized Dr. Russell’s distinguished career and his strong alignment with the University’s mission. “Scott’s incredible career, passion for education, and dedication to community-building make him a natural fit as our Chancellor. We’re thrilled to have him join us and are confident that his leadership will help us elevate the University’s profile and continue driving our vision forward.”

Dr. Russell recently celebrated his retirement from CBC after a remarkable 40-year broadcasting career with CBC. Well known for his passion for amateur sports, Dr. Russell covered 17 Olympic Games, including the most recent Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition to his broadcasting career, Dr. Russell has taught Canadian sports history at Toronto’s Centennial College, and contributed to numerous sports committees and charities, including the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Education Committee and the Paralympic Foundation of Canada.

A graduate of Western University with an M.A. in Journalism, Dr. Russell is also an acclaimed author, having penned three books on Canadian sports. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the George Gross Award for Outstanding Broadcasting and a CBC President's Award for Brand Champion. He received an honorary doctorate from Nipissing University in 2020 and resides in Toronto with his wife, Catherine.

Dr. Russell succeeds Dr. Paul Cook, who served as Chancellor since 2016. Dr. Cook was celebrated for his significant contributions to the University, particularly in fostering partnerships and enhancing Nipissing’s community engagement efforts.
