Campaign raises funds for Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship
With no hockey taking place this year, organizers of the ninth annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game got creative and instead held an online fundraising and awareness campaign at the end of March, raising $1045 for the Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship fund.
Lakers Athletics and Skater’s North Source for Sports also partnered for the event to offer the chance to win prizes for sharing Paul’s story and information about the event on social media.
Paul Nelson was a hard-working and well-respected student in Nipissing’s Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program. Paul was actively involved in the community, specifically in volunteering his time with his local fire department. He died in 2011 in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call.
To honour his memory, Nelson’s friends and Nipissing Physical Health and Education faculty created a scholarship in his name that is awarded annually to a deserving third-year Physical and Health Education student in Nipissing’s PHED 3016 Coaching course who demonstrates excellence in the development of their coaching philosophy. The 2020-21 recipient is Chloe Zummach.
The School of Physical and Health Education would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s virtual campaign.
