Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game Raises over $1,000
Faculty, staff, students, and alumni rallied together to raise over $1,000 for the Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship fund during the eighth annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game held on January 24 at Memorial Gardens.
This year, the student team broke the faculty team's three-year winning streak with a 6-5 victory. New to the event this year was a free public skate prior to the game which was a huge success and will become a fun annual tradition.
Paul Nelson was a hard working and well-respected student in Nipissing’s Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) program. Paul was actively involved in the community, specifically in volunteering his time with his local fire department. He died in 2011 in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call.
To honour his memory, Paul’s friends and Nipissing BPHE faculty created a scholarship in his name that is awarded annually to a third-year BPHE student in Nipissing’s PHED:3016 Coaching course who exemplifies excellence in the development of their coaching philosophy. Congratulations to this year's recipient, Alex Maycock.
Organizers would like to extend a special thank you to the Nelson family for their ongoing support of the event.
