NU offering new stream, certificates in finance

Students interested in a career in finance now have a clear pathway to the profession thanks to a new Finance stream within Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program.

“The new stream will allow our students to obtain specialized knowledge in the finance area, giving them a competitive advantage when looking for work in the field upon graduation,” said Dr. Rick Vanderlee, dean of the faculty of applied and professional studies.

The Finance stream is one of six streams that BBA students can pursue. The other streams include Accounting, Economics, Marketing, Organizational Studies and Technology Management. Depending on their interests and career goals, students within the Finance stream can specialize even further by following either the Entrepreneurial Finance path or Financial Product Sales Professional path.

Students pursuing the Entrepreneurial Finance path will learn how to raise funds for start-up businesses, create realistic financial plans, manage a firm’s cash flows, and interact effectively with banks and investors. This path will prepare students for financial roles in small businesses, entrepreneurial firms or commercial banking.

Those following the Financial Product Sales Professional path will learn about a variety of financial products and services existing in modern markets, how to create financial portfolios based on a client’s risk preferences and how to adjust financial strategies while taking into account age, career situation and family situation. This path will prepare students to work in areas such as financial products sales, insurance or financial advising, among others.

The School of Business is also introducing two certificates in finance: a certificate in Entrepreneurial Finance or Financial Product Sales Professional.

“The new stream and certificates are a win-win for our students as well as local employers who are looking to hire graduates with this type of expertise,” said Vanderlee. “They are welcome additions to our programming.”

Students applying to the BBA program can select the Finance stream on their application, while current students interested in pursuing the Finance stream or one of the certificates should contact Academic Advising for assistance in selecting the appropriate courses.
