Near North Voices – North Bay’s University-Community Choir – is pleased to announce their 10th season of choral innovation in North Bay.
Established in 2007 as an advanced choir on the Nipissing University campus, the choir’s broad repertoire is focused on art and cultural music from the 13th through 21st centuries, and has included a number of Canadian and Northern Ontario premieres.

Weekly rehearsals run September through early April. Membership is open to students, faculty and staff at Nipissing University and Canadore College, and to adults and high school students from North Bay and area. Near North Voices offers Student Choral Scholarships for qualified high school students who, over the course of the season, demonstrate substantial musical growth and an exemplary contribution to the ensemble.

“It’s hard to believe we are going into our 10th season as an ensemble,” said Dr. Adam Adler, artistic director of Near North Voices and assistant professor of Music Education at Nipissing University. “When I first began this ensemble, I had no idea what to expect, where it might go, to what level, and who would join. The ensemble has continued to grow and evolve each year, and the level of repertoire we’ve performed is way beyond what one might expect of a non-auditioned university-community choir. We’ve performed Canadian premieres of incredible repertoire, competed nationally, toured and collaborated with musicians and other ensembles from Canada, the United States and Europe. This being our 10th season, we will be celebrating with some especially exciting and fun repertoire.”

Near North Voices’ first rehearsal is on Wednesday September 7, in room F210 off the front lobby of Nipissing University. Meet-and-greet with refreshments begins at 6 p.m. and the rehearsal starts at 7. New members will be able to register following the rehearsal. A brief pitching and voice placement check will be available for singers who are new to the ensemble. Everyone is invited to bring a pencil, a water bottle and a sense of humour.
