Meet student leader Nicole Bigelow
Nipissing students consistently impress as leaders, in the classroom, on campus and in the community. Recently the university celebrated 25 student leaders at the annual Dave Marshall Leadership Awards. Over the coming months, NU News will introduce each student leader to the wider community with a short article discussing their accomplishments and activities. Today, we are pleased profile Nicole Bigelow, a fifth-year Concurrent Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education, Geography student and Dave Marshall Leadership Award winner in the community category.
Bigelow has devoted much time and commitment within the community of North Bay initially as co-lead and later as a volunteer mentor for the NU Reads program, a free literacy-based program for children aged 4-12 held at the North Bay Public Library.
Bigelow planned meaningful literacy learning activities for children in the community, and paired children with fellow education classmates to create individualized learning opportunities. She provided mentorship to the new program leaders, and maintained connections with families and community partners. Under Bigelow’s co-leadership, NU Read has grown in scope and attendance. Her creative ideas and outgoing nature contributed to the program’s week-to-week success.
The Dave Marshall Leadership Award recognizes full-time students who have made an outstanding extra-curricular contribution to their academic program, to the campus, or to the greater community. Community recipients are selected in recognition of their significant contribution to a community organization or group
