Meet student leader Mary White
Nipissing students consistently impress as leaders, in the classroom, on campus and in the community. Recently the university celebrated 25 student leaders at the annual Dave Marshall Leadership Awards. Over the coming months, NU News will introduce each student leader to the wider community with a short article discussing their accomplishments and activities. Today, we are pleased profile Mary White, a fourth-year Bachelor of Arts, honours, Gender Equality and Social Justice student and Dave Marshall Leadership Award winner in the campus category.
White has enhanced campus culture through her work as a Residence Don. In addition to her roles in mediation, academic and emotional support, and emergency on-call staffing, White has also organized an anti-Islamophobia campaign with a fellow student.
As part of the campaign, a student’s hijabs were displayed in the front foyer of residence, and together White and her colleague encouraged others to try them on, and ask questions as part of a larger campaign against Islamophobia.
White is a very friendly, caring and empathetic person. She strives to find out how her students are doing on a daily basis, and she works for inclusion and acceptance in the residence community.
The Dave Marshall Leadership Award recognizes full-time students who have made an outstanding extra-curricular contribution to their academic program, to the campus, or to the greater community. Campus recipients are selected in recognition of their ability to: enhance campus culture, create a sense of community on campus, and empower others to get involved.
