English Day impresses

Nipissing’s English department recently hosted 21 grade 12 English students from Chippewa Secondary School to campus for an English Day.
The event is an opportunity to showcase Nipissing’s beautiful campus and to introduce students to English studies at the university level.

The students were treated to a talk byDr. Sarah Winters, associate professor of English, on Harry Potter and War, received tours of campus and got a free lunch.

Alumnae Ashley Gregoris, English Studies and Arts Team Leader at Chippewa Secondary School wrote to Dr. Laurie Kruk to express her appreciation.

“The kids were really excited about it when we came back and were totally impressed by the Harry Potter lecture. They figure university will be amazing if all of their lectures could be "that cool",” she wrote. “Everyone was so amazed by the university and all it has to offer. In fact, many are now considering staying in North Bay for post secondary because they are so impressed!”

The students were especially impressed when Gregoris’ former professors (Dr. Breton, Dr. McMaster, and Dr. Kruk) remembered her and took the time to talk with their former student.

“They were really amazed by this but I told them that it was no surprise to me since we had such fantastic profs at Nipissing who took the time to conference with us and get to know us,” she wrote.
