Get ready to shine North Bay

Get ready North Bay, students at Nipissing University and Canadore College are ready to put the shine on the city to stamp out Cystic Fibrosis. The Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) and Canadore Students Representative Council (CSRC) are gearing up for the annual Shinerama campaign. This year’s theme is Bayshine 2013.  Students will be set up at a variety of sites across the North Bay community on Saturday, September 7, washing cars, shining shoes, helping carry groceries and whatever else they can do to add some shine to North Bay and its citizens while raising money for research to defeat cystic fibrosis.
Last year the North Bay students raised more than $22,000. This year, students are ambitiously optimistic that they will eclipse their $30,000 goal.
Shinerama is Canada's largest post-secondary school fundraiser. Each September, over 25,000 college and university students at over 60 campuses across Canada raise funds by shining shoes, cars, windows and anything else they can think of for cystic fibrosis research and treatment. Since 1964, students have raised over $21.5 million.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a fatal inherited disease that affects mainly the lungs and the digestive system. About one in every 2,500 children born in Canada has CF. Thanks to the advances in research and clinical care, more and more kids with CF are surviving into adulthood. In 1960, children born with cystic fibrosis rarely lived four years; today, in Canada, people with CF live into their thirties and beyond.
Nipissing University has been participating in Shinerama since the inception of its Charter in 1992, and, in conjunction with Canadore College, has raised more than $300,000.
“Shinerama has become an integral part of Frosh Week at Nipissing. It’s a chance for us to help out our home community of North Bay in some small ways, shining shoes and helping people.  More importantly, it’s a chance for students to work together for a greater societal good: defeating Cystic Fibrosis.  As students, we love Shinerama because we want to be a force for positive change in our world,” said Corey Grist, NUSU vice-president external.; “We are confident that the North Bay community will show its support for Shinerama 2013 to help us achieve our goal.”
This year, the NU Alumni Association will be hosting a Shinerama site at the Investors Group Financial Services Office at 1350 Fisher St. in North Bay. We are looking for volunteers to help wash cars from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Emailalumni@nipissingu.ca if you are able to volunteer. If you are unable to volunteer, please stop by to have your car washed!
