Final preparations for Lakers women’s hockey team

Gearing up to make history with the first ever OUA regular season women’s hockey game played in North Bay, the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team played their final two pre-season games this past weekend, earning a win and a loss.This past Friday night, the Lakers battled the Nepean Wildcats and, despite a strong second period where the Lakers scored three times, the Wildcats pulled out a 4-3 win thanks to a third period goal that broke the tie.
Laura McKenzie opened the scoring for the Lakers and Jade Gauthier found the back of the net twice, while Sabrina Picard made 26 saves in a losing cause.
The Lakers were back at it Saturday afternoon, taking on the University of Ottawa.
It was a much better start for the Lakers, as Carly Marchment scored two first period goals to put her team up 2-0 after one.
The score remained the same until the third period when the Gee Gees came storming back, scoring twice and eventually forcing the game into a shootout.
Kayla Carter scored the shootout winner for the Lakers and Jackie Rochefort was outstanding, making 31 saves to pick up the win.
Brooklyn Irwin also picked up a pair of assists for the Lakers in the win.
This Saturday afternoon, the first ever OUA women’s regular season hockey game will take place in North Bay as the Lakers will host the Brock Badgers on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the West Ferris Arena. They’ll take on the Guelph Gryphons Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., at West Ferris Arena, as well.
