Lakers Men's Volleyball team wins Silver, Humber Gold OCAA

Humber defeats Nipissing and wins Gold Medal in OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship action

North Bay, ON, February 25, 2012 — The Humber Hawks defeated the Nipissing Lakers today 3-0 to win in their third consecutive Gold Medal in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s Volleyball Championships at Nipissing University. Humber won the match in three straight sets (27-25, 25-20, 25-22) to secure the championship.

umber’s Player of the Game was awarded to setter Derek Quinn (Mississauga, ON). Nipissing’s Player of the Game was setter Taylor Bielby (Barrie, ON). The first set was exciting as Humber gained an early three-point lead. Humber’s first three points came from outside kills by Terrel Bramwell (Mississauga, ON).umber’s Player of the Game was awarded to setter Derek Quinn (Mississauga, ON). Nipissing quickly answered with a five-point lead, but the game was tied up again 19-19. The second set was dominated by Humber after a solid 9-4 early lead. Nipissing would not be able to tie it despite a late point run. The third and final set saw Nipissing command an early five-point lead of 9-4. Soon after that Humber evened the set at 11-11. The teams exchanged points until an additional 21-21 tie. However, Humber prevailed and earned a three-point victory in the set to win the match.

Humber’s Terrel Bramwell scored 22 kills, one serving ace, and one stuff block for 24 points. Teammate Andre Brown scored six kills, two serving aces, and four stuff blocks for 12 points. Nipissing’s Frankie Edgecombe made five kills and six stuff blocks for 11 points. Teammate Andre Leblanc scored nine kills and one stuff block for ten points.

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award went to Humber’s Derek Quinn, who served the ace to win the Gold Medal. The tournament all-stars were Terrel Bramwell and Andre Brown, Humber, Frankie Edgecombe and Scott Coulthard, Nipissing, Ian Cameron, Mohawk, and Peter Christian, Seneca.

The Humber Hawks have now won the Gold Medal in the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championships For three years in a row. The Nipissing Lakers took home the Silver Medal. It is their first OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship medal.
