Nipissing University participating in forestry conference

The Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada (CIF/IFC) will hold its 103rd Annual General Meeting and Conference in Huntsville, Ontario, September, 18 – 21, 2011, and Nipissing has been actively involved.

Dr. Jeff Dech and Dr. Peter Nosko, from Nipissing’s Biology Department, and Megan Smith, project manager for the Biomass Innovation Centre at Nipissing, will all be involved in conference session and were all members of the conference planning committee.

Dech has assembled a great collection of research posters from across the country covering the entire range of issues relevant to our forests. Research posters from Nipissing University include the following:

  • Predictive Habitat Modeling of Canada Yew (Taxus canadensis Marsh.) in the boreal forest of Ontario (Mayhew-Hammond, Shawn, Dech, Jeffery P., James, April , and Pokharel, Bharat)
  • An Ecosite-based Mortality Model for Boreal Tree Species in Ontario. (Pokharel, Bharat, and Dech, Jeffery, P.)
  • Regenerative feast or famine in the adventive and native ranges of northern red oak. (Major, Kelly C., and Nosko, Peter)
  • Is intraspecific variation in shade tolerance responsible for differences in regeneration success of red oak in North America and Europe: a comparison of leaf morphological traits within native and introduced populations. (Nosko, Peter, Major, Kelly C., and Moreau, Kerri)

Nosko is moderating presentations on Ethnobotany and forest plant resources and Effective silviculture strategies for challenging species.

Smith is moderating a presentation on From fossil fuel to fibre: moving Canada’s forest bioeconomy forward.

The conference will feature presentations, field trips and special events in the heart of Ontario's cottage country and world-renowned Algonquin Provincial Park. The timing of the event coincides with the region’s most picturesque season, as autumn colours will be at their fullest. The conference is promising to be a unique and valuable opportunity for all participants.

The conference keynote speaker is Dr. Ian Thompson, senior research scientist at the Great Lakes Forest Research Laboratory in Sault Ste. Marie. He is conducting research on woodland caribou and advising international forest policy for various UN organizations such as FAO, International Tropical Timber Organisation, and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
