Nipissing Nordic hosting Cross-Country Ontario training camp

The Nipissing Nordic varsity ski team, acting in collaboration with the North Bay Nordic Ski Club, have won their bid to host a Cross-Country Ontario training camp, bringing in some of the best skiers in the province to train at Nipissing University.

The camp will be held November 4, 5 and 6, and will feature Ontario Team head coach, Pavlina Sudrich, along with elite athletes to instruct and inspire Nipissing’s skiers.

The intensity-focused training camp will include a recovery training session open to the public, with instruction given in nordic walking, an excellent life-long exercise used by Olympic athletes right through to senior citizens. All are invited to take part in this healthy outdoor activity on the amazing forest trails at Nipissing.

If you're interested in volunteering by billeting an out-of-town athlete, please contact North Bay Nordic's Director of Athlete Development, Cynthia Stables at: cstables@cogeco.ca.

The North Bay Nordic Junior Racing Team and the Nipissing Nordic Varsity Team have completed two training camps this summer. One, an early-season adventure camp that included canoeing the Mattawa River to Samuel de Champlain Park, biking to Algonquin Park, and running the trails of Amable du Fond Park, all capped by a strength session. Their last camp in June involved an uphill double poling test on Monastary Hill that pushed the skiers to their physical and psychological limits, along with an aerobic threshold test performed under the supervision of Dr. Graydon Raymer, who has very kindly opened his PHED lab to the area's high performance cross-country ski racers.

The skiers' next volume camp will be held July 29, 30, 31, and will involve a partnership with the Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club in order to bring together some of Northern Ontario's best ski racers in a fun, competitive environment, as athletes aim to put in their biggest week of training for the year.

“Ski racers are made in the summer, and we can be confident in our future because we are preparing right now,” said Lakers head coach Toivo Koivukoski. “Our coaches and athletes are looking forward to excellent performances on the Ontario-Cup circuit, the OUA circuit, and at the Canadian National Championships in Mount St. Anne, Quebec, with a good portion of Ontario's cross-country ski racers and medal hopefuls coming out of this ski community.”
