Active Living and Learning Centre update
The clang of weights, the whir of treadmills and the requisite huffing and puffing of active people will soon return to Nipissing’s Active Living and Learning Centre as construction is progressing nicely on the first phase of the expansion.
By early Fall, many features of the new facility will be operational, including the weight room, cardio/fitness room, change rooms, dedicated varsity change rooms, main concourse and increased storage space as well as the living wall — an interior wall completely covered with vegetation, meant to improve air quality while offering some pretty cool aesthetic value as well.
The new gymnasium space, at 20,000 square feet, will triple the size of the existing gym, offer seating for 1150 people, and will feature a 17-foot by 11-foot jumbotron scoreboard, perfect for game highlights as well as videos to get the crowd buzzing with excitement.
Future plans for the next phase of the project will include research space for the Schulich School of Education’s Bachelor of Physical Health and Education (BPHE) program, with classrooms and new human performance and exercise physiology laboratories, a biomechanics lab, as well as a health psychology centre. The cost of phase one is estimated at $15 million.
