POSITION TITLE:                Residence On-Call Don

HOURS OF WORK:            average of 18hrs/ week (mid-August to April)

RATE OF PAY:                    $17.20/hour as determined by HR policy (applied first to the cost of residence accommodation and paid out thereafter – process under review)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The responsibilities of Residence On-Call Don are to promote the mission and goals of the residence life program at Nipissing University, to ensure that the Residence Community Living Standards (RCLS) are upheld, support safe community practices, and act as a referral agent for campus and community resources. Residence On-Call Dons are responsible for aiding in the development of a strong and positive community by working closely with their complexes Residence Life Staff and Residents’ Council.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

Some of the duties and responsibilities of a Residence On-Call Don include:

  • Fostering a positive, friendly and inclusive atmosphere in their interactions throughout the residence community.
  • Assume on-call shifts according to the schedule and conduct responsibilities, which includes upholding the Residence Community Living Standards, and responding to potential emergency or crisis situations
  • Communicate regularly, through a variety of means, with supervisors, and other Residence Life Team members to ensure the success of the Residence Life program
  • Role model appropriate personal behaviour and academic success at all times, including by adhering to the Residence Community Living Standards and the Nipissing University Student Code of Conduct
  • As part of this role, candidates must complete the following:
    • Attend Residence Life Team Spring Orientation in late March or early April 2025
    • Attend asynchronous online Pre-Service Training over the course of the spring/summer semester (June 2025 through to the beginning of August 2025)
    • Attend a 14-day in-person training in August (includes weekends): August 10th to August 23rd, 2025
    • Complete and submit all required student employment paperwork and Human Resources-required training prior to pre-service training in June 2025
    • Complete and submit a negative Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening
    • Complete and submit a valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification
  • Participate in ongoing training and workshops throughout the duration of employment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to attend the Residence Life Peer Educator Selection Process on February 1st, 2025.
  • Student (2nd year and above) with good academic standing (cumulative average of 65% or higher).
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student academic and personal success.
