POSITION TITLE: Research Assistant – Organic and Medicinal Chemistry

HOURS OF WORK: 12 hours per week
RATE OF PAY: $17.20/hour plus Vacation Pay as determined by HR Policy
JOB DESCRIPTION: Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry research laboratory at Nipissing University. The selected student is expected to work on a synthetic organic chemistry research project which includes performing organic reactions, reaction workup and purification of organic compounds using chromatography techniques. The student is expected to be highly organized and strictly follow standard operating procedures for various functions (e.g. lab-report writing, handling chemicals and laboratory glassware) in the laboratory. Appropriate training will also be provided. Students who have taken organic chemistry courses are encouraged to apply
DUTIES INCLUDE:
This position will assist with the following duties:
- Set up chemical reactions and monitor their progress.
- Purify and isolate reaction products using chromatographic techniques such as thin layer chromatography and column chromatography.
- Characterize reaction products using spectroscopic methods such as NMR, IR and LC-MS.
- Maintain a safe working environment in the lab.
- Maintain an up-to-date record of their work in a lab notebook.
