About the position

The Curator is responsible for the effective management of the collections and subcollections of the Mineralogy Section and other contracted collections care, if applicable. The Curator works with staff of the Mineralogy Section on the development of the collections. The Curator is responsible for ensuring maximum long-term value of the Mineralogy collections for Canada and to contribute to corporate objectives of the Museum. As part of the responsibility to develop and display portions of the collections, the Curator is expected to cultivate external working relationships with museum curators, collectors, dealers, and potential patrons who may support the Museum’s acquisition of material or the displaying of portions of the collection for public knowledge, education, and inspiration. The Curator may spend up to 20% of their time on scholarly activities, which includes conceiving, planning, conducting, and disseminating original scientific research within their area of expertise relevant to the mandate of the CMN and the objectives of the Research & Collections Division

Eligibility criteria

This position is open to all Employees of the Canadian Museum of Nature and any members of the public who meet the qualifications below.
*Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Education and training:

A PhD with a concentration or emphasis in mineralogy or petrology and some experience in working with diverse mineral groups and species in a museum or scientific environment;
OR
A M.Sc. with a concentration or emphasis in mineralogy or petrology with at least 3 years of experience in working with diverse mineral groups and species in a museum or scientific environment;
OR
A demonstrated equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Language requirements:

English and French are essential
Bilingual non-imperative: BBB/BBB

Experience:

  • Experience working with and/or developing mineralogy/geology collections (i.e. expert identification and classification of mineral specimens (including identification of a diverse number of common mineral species by sight), systematic organization, data entry, etc.).
  • Experience in cataloguing and digitizing specimen records in natural history or scientific collection databases.
  • Experience in working with minerals, including preservation/conservation, destructive sampling techniques, safe handling and care.
  • Experience with geo-informatics and the use of data management systems.
  • Experience with analytical techniques and data interpretation required for mineral identification and characterization. Relevant techniques could include: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy/probe, or Infrared/Raman spectroscopy.
  • Experience with setting and managing budgets.
  • Experience in the supervision and management of staff.
  • Experience in planning, managing and executing projects or work programs.
  • Experience using a variety of office software including word processing and presentation applications; spreadsheets; databases; and electronic mail.
  • Experience interacting with the public in various formats, such as group/class presentations, meet-the-expert events, and collection tours.

The following experience will be considered an asset:

  • Experience in handling requests for loans and acquisitions of mineralogy specimens.
  • Experience in mineral acquisitions, including specimen valuation and safe shipment requirements;
  • Experience conducting independent research in Earth Sciences.
  • Publication record and/or conference presentations.
  • Involvement in professional organizations relevant to the position.
  • Experience in training students and other employees.
  • Experience in fundraising.
  • Experience in interacting with mineral dealers / potential mineral donors for the purposes of collections care and development.
  • Other relevant study or work experience in natural sciences, museum studies, or related fields.
