Job Description:

Camp Chikepak is a camp for Mushkegowuk indigenous youth ages 9-14.  It is held for two weeks in August at the Bickell Outdoor Centre, 45 minutes east of Timmins.

We are looking for 8 Camp Counselors (4 male and 4 female) to supervise young campers and make sure they learn and have fun.

What do Camp Counselors do?

Out of all Camp Counselor duties, ensuring campers are safe is our top priority.  

  • Participate in training workshops held prior to camp
  • Participate in the entirety of camp, August 8th to August 23rd inclusive
  • Be responsible for the well being and safety of young children ages 9-14
  • Build relationships with campers by showing compassion, empathy and understanding
  • Supervise and participate in camp-wide programming activities with campers of different ages
  • Work cooperatively with other camp counselors and assistant counselors to ensure campers are safe
  • Overnighting in the cabin with their campers
  • Maintain adequate health and hygiene measures in the cabin
  • Have campers up and ready for the day, chaperoning to meals and activities
  • Ensure that the camper knows what activities they will be in during each day
  • Take roll call at designated times including, at all meals and bedtime
  • Assist with the camper showcase and karaoke on Friday nights. 

Camp Counselor Qualifications:

Being reliable and able to build good relationships with children are essential traits of a Camp Counselor.  

  • Post secondary education, preference to those in the ECE and Bachelor of Education fields
  • Proven experience as Camp Counselor or similar role working with children
  • Familiarity with camping and various outdoor activities
  • Patient and reliable
  • Organizational and communication skills
  • A love for children
  • Energetic and positive personality
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina for long days!)
  • First aid- and CPR-certified preferred
  • You will be required to provide a CPIC (vulnerable sector)

Compensation:

Competitive salary and travel expenses to and from camp.
