Alumni Profile – Robyn Jones (MESc ’20)
Robyn Jones graduated from Nipissing University in 2020 with a Master of Environmental Science. She relocated from northwestern Ontario to attend Nipissing, bringing her closer to family and to professors conducting leading research in her field. With a particular interest in limnology and hydrology, Robyn was keen to work with professors at Nipissing who had connections with various industry stakeholders.
As a master’s student, Robyn was part of a diverse cohort of Master of Environmental Studies and Master of Environmental Science students made up of individuals from different cultural and academic backgrounds, as well as varying ages and interests, offering a breadth of opportunities for personal and professional growth.
“Nipissing exposed me to new perspectives and allowed me to network within my community,” shared Robyn.
While attending Nipissing University, Robyn had the opportunity to participate in additional learning opportunities outside of the classroom including a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) program where she traveled with a group of students from Queen’s University and the University of Ottawa to different conferences and even Uganda to learn more about various aspects of water management.
As an alumnus, Robyn stays engaged with the University as a member of the Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board (NUAAB). She joined NUAAB in 2021 as a way to help support positive changes to the Nipissing community for both students and alumni.
“Being part of NUAAB feels like I am still an active member of the Nipissing community and keeps me connected to that time in my life,” she shared.
Robyn looks back on her time at Nipissing with gratitude and believes Nipissing offers many benefits for students.
“Nipissing offers top-notch programs and is striving to continuously improve,” she said. “Some professors go above and beyond to provide opportunities to their students which is something that is not advertised and can really only be found at small institutions like Nipissing.”
Robyn now works in North Bay, Ontario with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. She enjoys taking part in sports and training programs in the city and remains an active professional participating in workshops, conferences, and courses.
