Certified BPHE students can show you the way

A team of twenty-seven Bachelor of Physical and Health Education students recently earned certification in navigation after completing a series of tasks in the great outdoors at the Canadian Ecology Centre.

The student had already completed eight hours of in-class work with instructor Bill Steer, before venturing outside for the field portion of the certification.  Each is now certified through the National Green Check program, which will prove valuable to any student interested in a career in teaching, or as instructors or trainers in outdoor pursuits. Students may find themselves in a teaching, instructional or training environment, and risk assessment plans are becoming more of a requirement.  The spatial component is linked to emergency preparedness.

Students who completed the elective learned two spatial languages: Universal Transverse Mercator and longitude and latitude, as well as basic map reading and interpretation skills, plus compass use.
