​​​​​​​Nipissing University Celebrates 2024 Alumni Award Recipients

North Bay, ON – Last night, Nipissing University proudly honoured five distinguished alumni during its annual Alumni Awards celebration. The event, held at The Grande Event Centre in North Bay, recognized the exceptional achievements of alumni who have made significant contributions to their professions, communities, and the University. Hosted by the Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board (NUAAB), the awards spanned categories of influence, achievement, rising talent, philanthropy, and honorary recognition.

Each recipient exemplifies the values of Nipissing University through leadership, service, and dedication to their fields. The 2024 honorees were celebrated during a memorable evening filled with recognition and gratitude.

The 2024 Nipissing University Alumni Award recipients are:
 

  • Dr. Joyce Helmer, recipient of the Dr. James Jamieson Influential Alumni Award

    Dr. Joyce Helmer is a distinguished academic and dedicated advocate for Indigenous education and health. Dr. Helmer has built an impressive career spanning various fields, including curriculum development, advocacy, research, and community service. 

    Her work has earned her recognition and invitations to speak across Canada and globally, reflecting her significant impact in the field and status of a respected leader. 

     

  • Mabel Plourde-Doran, recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award

    Mabel Plourde-Doran, an accomplished professional in physiotherapy and education, is an Honours graduate of Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) program. Her commitment to the field extends beyond her professional and academic achievements, as evidenced by her volunteer work.

    Mabel’s positive influence, professional excellence, and unwavering support for her community make her an exemplary representative of Nipissing University.
     

  • Nakissa (Keesa) Koomalsingh, recipient of the Rising Star Alumni Award

    Nakissa Koomalsingh, widely known as Keesa K, is a pioneering advocate for women's sports in Canada and the founder of HOOPQUEENS, a groundbreaking initiative that introduced Canada’s first paid league for women’s basketball. Her profound impact on the sport has created opportunities that elevate and support female athletes. 

    Through her advocacy work and inspiring leadership, Keesa continues to drive positive change in women’s basketball and beyond, embodying the spirit of empowerment and equality she so passionately supports.

     

  • Dr. Paul Cook, recipient of the Honorary Alumni Award

    Dr. Paul Cook is the esteemed former Chancellor of Nipissing University and the President of Retired Badge Consulting Inc. With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, his tenure in law enforcement is marked by a reputation for ethical leadership and community engagement. 

    As a dedicated leader and community advocate, Dr. Paul Cook’s influence extends through his roles in public service, his contributions to Nipissing University, and his ongoing commitment to fostering positive change in North Bay and beyond.

     

  • Colin Vezina, recipient of the Philanthropy Alumni Award

    Colin P. Vezina is a proud graduate and lifelong supporter of Nipissing University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with Honours in 1988 while balancing his demanding role as Editor of the North Bay Nugget and his active involvement in the community. 

    His deep commitment to family and community has shaped much of his life and work. In addition to his professional achievements, Colin served in the Canadian Army Reserves and later the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve, where he rose to Lieutenant Colonel in 1982.

 

In his remarks, Nipissing University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kevin Wamsley congratulated the award recipients, expressing deep pride in the University's alumni. “These exceptional individuals represent the very best of Nipissing University,” Dr. Wamsley stated. “Their contributions, both locally and globally, inspire our students and the entire University community. We are incredibly proud to celebrate their success and their ongoing commitment to making a positive difference in the world.”

Echoing these sentiments, Laurel Muldoon, President of the Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board, praised the honorees for their remarkable achievements. “These individuals have made an indelible impact in their fields and the communities they serve. It is a privilege to celebrate their accomplishments,” Muldoon added.
