Certificate Workshops and Event Requests

Mental Health & Wellbeing is pleased to offer the following trainings to students, staff, and community members regarding mental health. These trainings are informative and will build your competencies around mental health concerns. Participants from all programs below will receive a resource book of course content and an official certificate from the developer organization.

Please note: Registrations will close one week before the workshop is scheduled to take place.

Mental Health & Wellbeing is available to support events around Mental Health and Wellness topics on campus.

We can also offer private Certificate Workshops for a select group of participants as long as the minimum requirements are met.

This course was created by an organization called LivingWorks Inc. to teach participants to recognize persons who have thoughts of suicide and refer them to people who are trained to do a Suicide Intervention. The course is available to anyone over the age of 15 and is approximately 3 hours in length.

ASIST

Livingworks Asist Logo

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. This course is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid also created by LivingWorks Inc. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don't require any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.

Small Talk

Small Talk is an interactive half-day workshop which examines warning signs in a child and explores intervention strategies through stories and case studies. This workshop is a Centre for Suicide Prevention Course for those working with children under the age of 12 and who may have thoughts of suicide, with a focus on childhood development. This course is approximately 3.5 hours in duration.

Mental Health First Aid – Adults who Interact With Youth

This workshop, a Mental Health Commission of Canada course, was developed to train people provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid: Adults Who Interact with Youth focuses on mental health problems and first aid for youth ages 12 - 24. Topics include: Mental Health problems and Stigma, Substance related disorders, mood disorders, Anxiety and Trauma related disorders, Eating disorders and Psychotic disorders. This workshop is two days in duration.

Looking Forward

Looking Forward is an interactive half-day workshop created for individuals working with youth aged 12 to 24.This workshop, a Centre for Suicide Prevention Course it discusses strategies to encompass the developmental, cognitive, and emotional differences found within this age group. This course is approximately 3.5 hours in duration.

The Inquiring Mind

Mental Health Commission of Canada logo - The Inquiring Mind

The Inquiring Mind Post-Secondary is an evidence-based program designed to address and promote mental health and reduce the stigma of mental illness in an educational / student setting. The goals of the 3 hour training are to: 

  • reduce stigma and negative attitudes towards those struggling with poor mental health
  • help participants maintain mental health and improve resilience and coping strategies
  • teach participants about the Mental Health Continuum Model
  • foster a supportive campus community 
  • support others

This course is free for all current Nipissing University students.

Workshop Policies

  • Please note that there is a fee for participation in all Certificate Courses.
  • Registration for all Certificate Workshops will close one week before the workshop is scheduled to take place
  • All registration and payment is to be completed online through the sign up link above.
  • Course dates are offered based on demand and will be cancelled if the minimum number of registrants is not met.
  • All workshops will take place at Nipissing University (100 College Drive, North Bay ON) unless otherwise specified.
  • A confirmation e-mail will be sent to all registrants 3 days prior to the workshop, this e-mail includes the room location.
  • Food/meals are not provided during any of our certificate workshops.
  • Full attendance is required for the entire workshop, if more then 20 minutes is missed certificate of completion will not be provided.
  • If you require any special accommodations to take part in the workshop please let us know by contacting us at mhworkshops@nipissingu.ca.
  • If a session is cancelled you will be notified by e-mail up to 3 days prior to the scheduled workshop. Your options will be to request a free refund or transfer your registration to another workshop date.
  • There is a 10$ administration fee for all refunds, except if we have cancelled the workshop.
  • Cancellations will not be refunded if less than 5 days notice is provided.
