Nipissing University celebrates impact of research during annual Research Month
North Bay, ON – March is Research Month at Nipissing University, and the community is invited to take part in a series of events throughout the month designed to celebrate the diverse research happening at the University and its impact locally, nationally, and internationally.
Research Month celebrations will include the popular NU360 Speaker Night on Wednesday, March 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the NUSU Student Centre. This annual event invites the community to discover the diverse research happening at the University and its relevance to the community through a series of six-minute faculty presentations.
Topics will include:
- Canadian Education Workers’ Experiences with Violence in Schools – Dr. Kristen Ferguson and Dr. Melissa Corrente
- The Gendered Division of Housework and Fertility Intention in Canada – Dr. Amir Erfani
- The World Upside Down: Truth, Reconciliation, and Noir – Dr. Tyson Stewart
- Nano-Scalpel: The Engagement of Nanotechnology and Medicine – Dr. Ali Hatef
- Bringing our Ancestors Home: The Chicago Field Museum/Robinson Huron Treaty Repatriation Project – Dr. Kirsten Greer and Randy Restoule (Dokis First Nation)
Events will continue on Friday, March 22 to Saturday, March 23 with the 17th annual Undergraduate Research Conference (UGRC), which highlights the contributions of undergraduate research at Nipissing University and across Ontario while also giving students the opportunity to present their work to peers and engage in scholarly debate.
This year’s UGRC keynote address by Dr. Colin McCarter, Assistant Professor at Nipissing and Canada Research Chair in Climate and Environmental Change, is open to the public and will focus on his research into how wetland wildfires are releasing historical industrial pollution into our air, land, and water. This talk will take place on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. in the Nipissing Theatre.
Lastly, the Three Minute Thesis Competition will wrap up Research Month on Tuesday, March 26 in the Nipissing Theatre (F213). This University-wide competition challenges graduate students to present their research to a panel of non-specialist judges in an engaging, compelling way, in under three minutes.
