Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) takes an active role in supporting students by providing various services on campus. The Student Union ensures that all students, whether full-time or part-time, are members and contribute to the organization through ancillary fees paid during registration. NUSU's primary focus is to maintain academic excellence and promote social growth among students. This involves handling multiple aspects of student life, such as overseeing academic governance and organizing social events. In addition, NUSU demonstrates its commitment to student welfare by sponsoring and organizing a Food Pantry on campus to assist students in need.
The political affairs of NUSU are managed by the Board of Directors, which convenes throughout the academic year. NUSU's By-laws and Meeting Minutes are easily accessible on their website, nusu.com. The Board of Directors consists of four executive officers (President, VP Finance & Administration, VP Advocacy & Awareness, and VP Student Life), who are elected annually in the Spring. Moreover, there are 10 Directors-at-Large who represent students throughout the academic year and have the highest decision-making authority within NUSU.
NUSU holds voting power in Nipissing University's Academic Senate and the Board of Governors, while also having representation in various Board and Senate Committees. To fill student positions on the Academic Senate, NUSU conducts by-elections at different times during the year.
