North Bay Youth Soccer Club donates $200,000 to Nipissing University in support of Lakers athletes

North Bay, ON – Thanks to a generous $200,000 donation from the North Bay Youth Soccer Club, Nipissing University has established a new endowment fund, that will provide financial support for incoming student-athletes who have demonstrated both academic excellence and athletic prowess. The North Bay Youth Soccer Club Award Fund will provide two annual $3,000 awards to deserving first-year students who have been recruited to play varsity soccer for the Nipissing Lakers and have attended a Nipissing district secondary school.

Named in honour of two pillars of the local soccer community, the awards are a testament to the North Bay Youth Soccer Club's ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent in both academics and sports. The Heather Cluff Award will be presented to a full-time female student, while the Richard Dull Award will recognize a full-time male student, each entering their first year at Nipissing University.

Richard Dull’s family moved to North Bay from Bermuda in 1970, and by 1972, Dull began his soccer journey in the North Bay Kiwanis Minor Soccer League. He quickly became an outstanding player, representing North Bay on several youth all-star teams. Dull was a fixture in the local soccer scene, not only as a player but also as a coach, sponsor, and referee. After a long battle with cancer, Dull passed away in April 2023. The North Bay Youth Soccer Club Richard Dull Award will serve as a fitting tribute to one of the most colourful and dedicated individuals in the history of North Bay soccer.

Heather Cluff was a vibrant 16-year-old NBYS Club player who also served as an assistant coach alongside her father, Jim. Cluff was passionate about giving back to her community and had dreams of becoming a doctor. Tragically, she was diagnosed with cancer in 1992 and despite a courageous battle, passed away in 1993. The North Bay Youth Soccer Club Heather Cluff Award honours her memory and the fiery spirit of a young woman who was determined to make a difference.

“The North Bay Youth Soccer Club has always been about more than just the game. We are thrilled to extend our support to young athletes as they embark on their academic and athletic journeys at Nipissing University,” said Sue Knight, President of the North Bay Youth Soccer Club. “This endowment ensures that Heather Cluff and Richard Dull's legacies will continue to inspire future generations.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the North Bay Youth Soccer Club for their generous contribution,” said Vito Castiglione, Director of Athletics at Nipissing University. “These awards will not only alleviate financial pressures for student-athletes, but will also encourage them to excel in both their studies and their sport. This partnership reflects the strong bond between Nipissing University and the North Bay community.”

The North Bay Youth Soccer Club Award Fund will play a pivotal role in supporting Nipissing Lakers athletes in perpetuity, ensuring they have the resources to succeed both on and off the field.
