Applicant Requirements (to be considered for admission):

  • A recognized undergraduate degree (conferred by June 2019 for the September 2019 program start)
  • Completion of all teaching subject requirements (if applicable see division requirements below). Transcripts submitted by the transcript deadline must include ALL in progress courses.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of ten full courses (20 semester courses) to their undergraduate degree, not including college transfer credit, to be eligible for consideration 

*Please note that the above Applicant Requirements are the minimum to be considered for the program.

Admission Average Calculation:

  • Admission averages are calculated on the best 10 full (20 half or semester) university courses (not including college transfer courses)
  • If an applicant presents more than 25 full courses, only the first 25 courses will be considered
  • Applicants with a graduate degree will have a maximum of 5 full graduate courses included in their average.  
  • A minimum admission average of 70% is required for consideration. If you have, or will have, a minimum of 10 full (20 semester) undergraduate courses by the time you complete your degree, not including college transfer credit, your admission average will be based on what appears on your transcript submitted by the transcript deadline.
  • If you have an average of less than 70% on your best 10 full (20 semester) courses, you will not be considered for admission.
  • Admission cut-off averages can be higher depending on the quality and quantity of applicants in a given year.

Special Admissions Policies:

  • Applications from qualified candidates who are Aboriginal, members of visible minorities, and differently-abled persons are encouraged 
  • Applications to the Primary/Junior division (P10 or P11) are encouraged from candidates who hold an undergraduate degree plus an Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child and Youth Worker (CYW) diploma or hold an undergraduate degree specializing in Child Studies
  • Applicants will be sent information on self-identifying once their application has been received
  • Please note that applicants considered for any of the special admission criteria must still meet the minimum admission requirements.

Enrolment in the Bachelor of Education program is limited. Selection of candidates is based on academic achievement. Experiential qualifications will only be taken into consideration for those applying through the special admission criteria outlined above. 

Transcripts:

  • Transcripts from all universities, must be received immediately.  Please ensure that these are ordered as soon as you apply.   
  • Official transcripts from Ontario universities must be ordered through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) by clicking on the “Transcript Requests” section of your application after you have completely filled out the “Institutions Attended” section. Official transcripts from Canadian universities outside Ontario must be ordered from the institutions and sent directly to Admissions Office, Nipissing University, Box 5002, 100 College Drive, North Bay, Ontario P1B 8L7
  • Applicants who have attended post-secondary institutions outside of North America must have their foreign transcripts assessed by World Education Services (WES):www.wes.org/ca. We require a WES Credential Evaluation Report, including a Course-by-Course Analysis. WES evaluations must be sent directly to the Admissions Office, Nipissing University, Box 5002, 100 College Drive, North Bay, Ontario P1B 8L7
  • All transcripts must be received by the transcript deadline
  • Canadian university students studying abroad as part of an exchange program do not need to provide a WES evaluation.

International Applicants:

  • ​​All foreign transcripts must be assessed by World Education Services (WES):www.wes.org/ca. We require a WES Credential Evaluation Report, including a Course-by-Course Analysis.   • Candidates whose first language is not English will be required to submit the results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) or Pearson Test of English Academic (see required scores below)

TOEFL: minimum score of 100 (iBT) with a minimum score of 27 on writing and 27 on speaking.

IELTS: Minimum score of 7 with scores of at least 6.5 in reading and listening, and scores of at least 7 in writing and speaking. 

MELAB: Minimum score of 90, with at least 4 on the Oral Interview Component.

PEARSON: overall score of 67 with scores of at least 60 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

P10 Primary/Junior

This division prepares the candidate to teach from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6.  Candidates do not choose teaching subjects.  An undergraduate degree with breadth is required.

P11 Primary/Junior – French as a Second Language

Students who graduate with the P/J FSL BEd degree will be qualified to teach French as a second language (ie. core, extended, and immersion) Grades K-12.

Primary/Junior – French as a Second Language (FSL) applicants must possess oral and written fluency in French and submit proof of at least one of the following credentials:

  • a Certificate of Bilingualism from Nipissing University, Laurentian University or Level C from the Federal government completed within two years of application to the BEd program or
  • a transcript showing proof of graduation from a francophone university having studied in the French language or
  • a Level B2 Diploma (provided upon successful completion of the DELF French proficiency test) completed within two years of application to the BEd program or
  • Three full undergraduate courses (6-one semester courses) in French with no more than one full course (2-one semester course) at the first-year level. It is recommended that students present a combination of French language, grammar, composition, literature and culture courses. No more than one full course (2-one semester courses) in translation may be counted.

P20 Junior/Intermediate

This division prepares the candidate to teach Grade 4 to Grade 10 with specific preparation in one teaching subject, at the Intermediate level.  Candidates must select one teaching subject and have at least three full undergraduate courses in that teaching subject. English - Courses presented for the teachable must be English literature courses. English remedial courses will not be considered. (e.g. Nipissing’s ENGL 1501/1502, ENGL 1551/1552 will not be considered). Cross-listed courses will not be counted for a teachable in English.

French - Teacher candidates for French as a second language at the Junior Intermediate level must possess oral and written fluency and submit proof of at least one of the following credentials to the Office of the Registrar:

  • a Certificate of Bilingualism from Nipissing University, Laurentian University or Level C from the Federal government completed within two years of application to the BEd program or
  • a transcript showing proof of graduation from a francophone university having studied in the French language or
  • a Level B2 Diploma (provided upon successful completion of the DELF French proficiency test) completed within two years of application to the BEd program or
  • three full undergraduate courses (6-one semester courses) in French with no more than one full course (2-one semester courses) at the first-year level. It is recommended that students present a combination of French language, grammar, composition, literature and culture courses. No more than one full course (2-one semester courses) in translation may be counted towards the teaching subject.

Instrumental Music - The prerequisite is three full (6-one semester) undergraduate performance courses, or equivalent. Candidates will be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline. Applicants should have experience with brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.

Mathematics - Mathematics courses equivalent to a secondary school Mathematics course cannot be counted towards the teaching subject. At least one full course (2-one semester courses), of the three full courses (6-one semester courses) required, must be beyond the first year level.

Religious Education in Catholic Schools - Please note that this teaching subject prepares teachers of Religious Education in Roman Catholic schools. Roman Catholic Boards of Education require that student teachers be of the Catholic faith.  Candidates may be asked to provide a pastoral reference.

Science (General) - The prerequisite is three full undergraduate courses (6-one semester courses) in a combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Candidates must have two of these three disciplines.

Visual Arts - The prerequisite is three full undergraduate studio courses (6-one semester courses). Examples of studio courses are courses such as painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. Candidates will also be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline.

P30 Intermediate/Senior

This division prepares the candidate to teach Grade 7 to Grade 12, with specific preparation in two teaching subjects.  Candidates must have at least five full undergraduate courses (or 10-one semester courses) in the first teaching subject selected and at least three full undergraduate courses (6-one semester courses) in the second teaching subject. Candidates must choose two teaching subjects from the following:

Business Studies - General - As a first teaching subject, five full courses (10-one semester courses) are required from at least two of the following areas: Organizations/Organizational Behaviour (Human Resources), Management, Marketing, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Accounting, and Technology Management. Only one full (two semester) course in Economics can count towards the requirement. As a second teaching subject, three full courses (6 one-semester courses) are required from at least two of the following areas: Organizations (Human Resources), Management, Marketing, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Accounting, and Technology Management. Only 1–one semester course in Economics can count towards the requirement.

English - Courses presented for the teachable must be English literature courses. English remedial courses will not be considered. (e.g. Nipissing’s ENGL 1501/1502, ENGL 1551/1552 will not be considered). Cross-listed courses will not be counted for a teachable in English.

No more than one full course (2-one semester courses) in translation may be counted towards the teaching subject.

Visual Arts - Candidates must present the required number of courses including a minimum of three full undergraduate studio courses (6-one semester courses). Examples of studio courses are courses such as painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.Candidates will be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline.
