Thorn Book Grant

The Thorn Book Grant (2022) offered K-8 North Bay and Parry Sound educators the opportunity to submit a personalized proposal for their classroom with/on behalf of their learners in support of their ongoing work to support literacy learning (up to $500 each). A total of 15 grants were provided. Please check back for future offerings of this grant.

Thorn Book Grant Criteria for consideration:

  • Books build understandings of diversity, equity and social justice;
  • Books offer potential for differentiation and personalized meaning-making opportunities;
  • Books are Canadian (where fitting) and published within the last 10-15 years;
  • Books offer potential for cross-curricular connections;
  • Books can/will be used in collaboration with another classroom/educator.

Our box of books has arrived! Thank you! As I showed our class the books, they were very excited! I promised to go through as many of the books as I can this year, but they will be put to even better use in the fall. I really appreciate this opportunity, and the books will be shared by others at our school.

I would like to say thank you to the NU Centre for Literacy for helping foster a love of literature through the Thorn Book Grant. The children were thrilled to dig into the new books while the sun was peeking through the leaves, the wind rustling the pages, and the birds singing a merry tune. So far our favourite is "Not a Stick", and we have found that the forest floor is covered with wands, fishing poles, toad-finders, and swords!

ELK Educator

My class was very excited to go through them and have already started reading some of them. Thank you again, this has been an amazing opportunity for myself and my class, especially as a new teacher!
