Department of Fine and Performing Arts

Nipissing University invites applications for a part-time appointment teaching Art History and Visual Studies in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, effective August 1st 2018 (subject to budgetary approval).  As part of the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Department of Fine and Performing Arts offers an undergraduate BFA Honours degree and a BA Major with an Art History and Visual Studies stream.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach the following undergraduate courses:

Modern Art and Architecture (second-year)

In this course, students focus on the movements and themes that dominate art, design, architecture, and the artists whose individual expression redefined artistic traditions in the twentieth century. Students examine artists and their work in their political, social and theoretical context, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between art and society.

Issues in Curation and Museum Representation (fourth-year)

In this course, students address the history of Western practices of curating, collecting, and display, and explore revisions to those practices through the lens of critical theories, which may include theories of gender, race, class, and sexuality.

Critical Theories of Art History and Visual Studies (third-year)

Students utilize interdisciplinary approaches that engage with the field of contemporary art and Visual Studies. Students become familiar with a variety of theories, such as Marxism, feminism, queer theory, critical race studies, and postcoloniality that can be applied to the study of contemporary art, as well as to art historical and studio practices.

Special Topics in Art History and Visual Studies (fourth-year)

In this course, students will investigate a special topic or issue relevant to the field of Art History and Visual Studies. The topic will vary year-to-year, dependent on course instructor, but will involve an advanced level of critical engagement and independent study.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in art history and teaching experience.  Candidates who are “All But Dissertation” will be considered.

Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae; a teaching dossier that includes sample course outlines, a statement of teaching philosophy; evidence of successful teaching; and a list of three referees. Review of applications will commence July 2, 2018, and continue until the position is filled.
