REQUIRED PRACTICUM COMPONENT
Many of our Additional Qualification courses require candidates to complete a practicum, action investigation, or directed observation component.
- A practicum is an opportunity for you to integrate your learning and experience in a course and apply this to a real-life situation, observing and working with students.
- In action investigation, the teacher is the subject of his/her own research inquiry. The purpose is to evaluate and improve one’s own teaching practice. Practitioners take control of their own work and understand it better through a process of self reflection based on classroom data. The data is the kind that is usually collected by teachers in the course of their normal teaching and assessment activities.
- Structured observation is a process of keeping anecdotal notes over a defined period of time. These observations provide formative assessment data to serve as a basis for program planning.
Nipissing University recognizes that our candidates come from a variety of different situations (e.g., full-time classroom teachers, occasional teachers, teachers on leave, teachers in remote areas, etc.) These situations are not barriers to completing the practicum component of a course. Through communication with the course instructor, a strategy can be negotiated that will meet the course requirement.
