Distance Courses

May and June Intersession :
Each May and June, Nipissing University provides an on-campus intersession in North Bay and Brantford for graduating BEd students. This session allows candidates to expand on their qualifications in a very short time frame immediately following their BEd completion. All of our professional development courses are degree credit courses and are recognized by OCT. This can be an important factor for pay category purposes with QECO and OSSTF. The courses increase your marketability in a very competitive job market and courses like Special Education are often a condition of hire. These courses have a 3-week classroom component and a 4 or 5 day practicum placement. It is the students’ responsibility to arrange their own placements.

May 2010: Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Additional Basic Qualification courses will be offered at the North Bay campus. The Primary, Intermediate and Senior Additional Basic Qualification courses are offered in Brantford as well.

June 2010: Special Education, Part I is offered in North Bay and Brantford.  FSL, Part I is offered in North Bay.

MAY INTERSESSION - Additional Basic Qualifications

What are they?

Additional Basic Qualification courses are courses that lead to qualification in a division beyond the two that are part of your BEd program.  In the May Intersession we offer the Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Additional Basic Qualification courses. All of these courses include a 4-day observational practicum component that is arranged by the student.

The 4-day practicum must be completed from May 25 to May 28.

PRACTICUM

Students are required to arrange their own practicum placements for the ABQ courses in May, and Special Education and FSL in June.

Distance practica are structured differently than the practica for intersession

PRACTICUM PLACEMENTS WITH THE BLUEWATER DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

All requests for AQ / ABQ course placements must be made to the Board Contact person. Do not contact a principal or teacher directly.

For Secondary placements, the contact person is Pat Luckhart, email address is: pat_luckhart@bwdsb.on.ca
For Elementary placements, the contact person is Cathy Woodley, email address is: cathy_woodley@bwdsb.on.ca

They ask that the students provide them with an adequate amount of time in order for them to make the necessary contacts with our principals and teachers. Once they have arranged for an appropriate placement, they will connect the AQ student with the school principal and they may then arrange specific details.

PRACTICUM PLACEMENTS WITH HURON SUPERIOR DISTRICT CATHOLIC AND OTTAWA CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARDS

Please note that the Huron Superior District Catholic School Board and the Ottawa Catholic District School Boards do not allow students to arrange their own placements and have requested that students not contact teachers or principals directly regarding these placements. Since we do not have the resources to arrange practicum placements for ABQ/AQ courses, we recommend you choose an alternate board.

TEXTBOOKS

For most of the Intersession courses, no textbook will be required.

Distance courses - textbooks - depending on the course, a textbook may be required
